Title
Defend the Zone
Purpose
The objective of this drill is to develop players' abilities to switch efficiently between offensive and defensive roles, promoting agility and strategic thinking in tight spaces.
Setup
- Mark out a rectangular area measuring 35 yards in length and 15 yards in width.
- Create a central zone of 15x15 yards, situated in the middle of the rectangular area.
- Each end of the grid should have a 10x15 yard attacking zone.
- Split all players into two teams, with each team starting in one of the end zones.
- Keep several extra balls ready to maintain the drill's flow.
How To Play
- A designated defender begins in the center zone, attempting to intercept attacking players.
- Attackers begin their movements in their respective end zones, aiming to evade the defender and reach the opposite end.
- Upon successful crossing, the defender remains in the center, while the attacker swaps roles to become the new defender.
- Attackers should transition quickly when the ball is passed to them, applying pressure on the defender.
- Only one ball is used at a time, and if out of play, immediately restart with a spare ball.
- Coaches can periodically change defenders to ensure varied experiences for players.
Coaching Points
- Remind players to adapt quickly between roles to enhance their versatility on the field.
- Encourage defenders to utilize body positioning and maintain a defensive stance to guide attackers wide.
- Attackers must prioritize quick and purposeful dribbles to bypass the defender.
- Focus on explosive starts for both attackers and defenders to simulate game-like scenarios.
